State Highway 2 between Opotiki and Gisborne is closed following a truck crash.
Police said the truck overturned at Matawai and the road was blocked.
They said it was likely to remain closed for most of the day while while heavy lifting equipment was used to clear the scene.
Motorists are being advised to delay travel in the area or use alternative routes.
