Record low temperatures over for now - NIWA

8:44 am on 15 July 2010

NIWA says a period of record low temperatures around many parts of the country is at an end - for the meantime.

Taumarunui had an air temperature on Monday of -6.8 degrees, its coldest since records began there.

On the same day, Queenstown recorded -7.2 degrees - its third coldest morning since 1871.

With a high moving off New Zealand, the National Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research says temperatures will rise.

Meantime, NIWA is sticking with its forecast of above-average winter temperatures.
