Two teenagers have been arrested in Hamilton for involvement in a forged licence manufacturing ring that police describe as a level of sophistication not encountered in Waikato before.
The pair, both aged 17, have been charged and will appear in the Hamilton District Court.
As well as an array of technology, police say the forgers also had imported dies, papers and a specialist stamp that replicated the New Zealand Government watermark on the licences.
Police estimate that about 60 drivers licences were produced and sold for between $30 and $60 each and used to gain access to bars.
They say any young person in possession of forged licences risks serious repercussions if caught trying to use the false documents.
Police say they first became aware of the forgery ring in May. More arrests are expected.
