A man who terrorised his partner and poured boiling water over her has been sentenced to prison for seven and a half years.
Dean Griffiths, 41, was sentenced in the Wellington District Court on Tuesday on a number of charges including wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
In a five-day attack on the woman, Griffiths hit her repeatedly with a broomstick, and punched her about the face, breaking her left eye socket.
Judge Stephen Harrop said Griffiths stuffed a kitchen sponge in the woman's mouth to prevent her crying out before he poured boiling water over her.
Judge Harrop said the attack was prolonged and degrading, and included elements of torture and inquisition.
Griffiths initially prevented the woman from seeking help.
Judge Harrop said the woman is still being treated for burns and the photographs of her injuries were harrowing to see.
He ordered that Griffiths serve at least half the sentence before being considered for parole.
