Waiuku Road and Awhitu Road are among 33 locations across the country where new cameras are being installed.

The national road policing manager, Steve Greally, said the new cameras are being installed in areas identified as having a high crash risk.

It's part of a $10 million camera expansion programme that was announced in 2013.

All together there will be five cameras installed in the Counties Manukau district.

Last year 379 people were killed on the roads; the death toll this year is already at 18.

Superintendent Greally said the cameras were not about collecting fines but encouraging people to slow down.

In October last year, police revealed there were only 18 fixed speed cameras in operation across New Zealand.

Those cameras were limited to the urban districts of Waitemata, Auckland City, Counties Manukau and Wellington.
