A service has been held at Burnham Military Camp in Christchurch after a soldier died earlier this week.

Lance Corporal Barney Te Kani, who died on 3 January, was remembered during a service at the camp this morning.

He was the father of two young boys and had served in the Solomon Islands.

A spokesman for the New Zealand Defence Force said that Lance Corporal Te Kani was a talented soldier, who had recently been promoted in recognition of his leadership potential.

"The New Zealand Defence Force, especially members of the 2nd/1st Battalion at Burnham, extend their deepest sympathies to his family and friends on his passing," he said.

He would not comment further, as the death has been referred to the coroner.

The police confirmed they were called to the camp about 9.20pm on Wednesday.

The death is not considered suspicious.
