Motorsport promoter Ron Dixon held a two-day international rally cross at Bay Park in February 2016.

The council-owned venue is now taking legal action against him to recover $19,446.25 in outstanding debt as well as $3738 in costs and $1023.25 in reimbursements.

Bay Venues chief executive Gary Dawson said the debt is unpaid hirage fees for the event.

"He basically hired the venue from us and we're just seeking moneys that are owed to us from that event.

"We've got our policies around debt collection and the money is owed to us and we've been chasing it up."

The event went ahead and involved different cars racing in the stock car pit and inside the stadium, Mr Dawson said.

"We've tried to get the money from him and we've had no luck so the next step is to go down this particular path."

Mr Dixon has not yet responded to RNZ's request for comment.
