A fence being built around it is almost completed.

The Mackenzie District Mayor said the congregation of the Church of the Good Shepherd was fed up with rude and disrespectful tourists who wander into the church during services, including weddings and funerals.

Graham Smith said the council was waiting on a decision from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment for a permanent fix, but in the meantime some temporary measures were being taken.

Church committee member Caroll Simcox said a net fence was nearly built, and signs and a padlocked gate should be installed by Thursday.

People would still be able to visit the church between 9am and 5pm, but during services a barrier could be put up to block entry.
