TVNZ presenters Toni Street and Mike Hosking will step down from the Seven Sharp television show from tomorrow night.

Mike Hosking airs a controversial opinion on New Plymouth mayor Andrew Judd on TVNZ's Seven Sharp last month.

The pair have co-hosted the prime-time programme for the past four years, with Ms Street taking out the TV Personality of the Year award at this year's TV awards for her hosting.

In a statement from TVNZ, Ms Street said she wished to cut back the number of hours she was working to focus on family.

"With two young children, I want to be home more often in the evenings for them.

"It's been a privilege to be part of such a professional, fun and supportive team."

Mr Hosking did not give a reason for his departure but said he felt he was leaving while at the top of his game.

"Given we started together we end together. It is also always good to leave on your own terms and at your own time, often a rare trick in media."

John Gillespie, the broadcaster's head of news, said Ms Street and Mr Hosking had served TVNZ well.

"They're a dynamic team and together they've been a mainstay of New Zealand's evening viewing for several years. Their leadership at 7pm has been a defining force in our media landscape."

Ms Street is set to return to the small screen next year covering the Commonwealth Games for TVNZ.

TVNZ said it would release the new hosts of Seven Sharp in January.
