DoC fees rise

2:54 pm on 3 July 2010

Trampers now have to pay more to use Department of Conservation huts.

DoC has increased fees on walks such as the Milford, Kepler and Heaphy tracks by $5 per night, with charges also rising for annual and six monthly back country passes.

An annual back country pass has risen from $90 to $120 and a half year pass has gone up from $60 to $90. The fees have not been increased since 2008.

However, the huts remain free for those under 18.

DoC says the increases are needed to offset the rising costs of servicing the huts and facilities.

It says the fees have not increased since 2008 and the income will cover only about a third of the maintenance costs.
