No plans to ban baby-bottle chemical

The Food Safety Authority says there are no plans in New Zealand to phase out baby bottles containing the chemical Bisphenol A, as has been announced across the Tasman.

The Australian government says major retailers will voluntarily stop stocking the bottles from Thursday.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Health in Australia, Mark Butler, says public concern has prompted the move, though it's been found that the intake of BPA or plasticisers is very low and doesn't pose a risk to babies.

A New Zealand Food Safety Authority spokesperson says it is not planning to follow suit because the bottles are being phased out naturally as manufacturers stop making them.
