Customs find 3kg of cocaine hidden in traveller's suitcase

A Brazilian man was found with more than $1 million of cocaine in the lining of his suitcase when he arrived at Auckland airport yesterday.

The 38-year-old, who was on a flight from Chile, was arrested after 3kg of the drug were found in the case.

He appeared in the Manukau District Court this afternoon and remains in custody.

Customs said it had arrested seven drug couriers from Thailand, Chile and Brazil at Auckland Airport in the past three months.

It said they were carrying more than 20kg of either methamphetamine or cocaine in total, or nearly $26m worth of drugs.

Earlier this month, police seized an estimated 46kg of cocaine - worth about $20m - from an address in Tauranga after it was smuggled in on a commercial ship.
