The train struck two people who appeared to be pedestrians at the Boundary Road crossing in Papakura, south of Auckland, just after 11pm.

Both died at the scene.

The rural railway crossing had working barrier arms and bells.

Five passengers were onboard the train at the time and were taken home safely, Auckland Transport said. The train driver has been offered counselling.

Auckland Transport said trains would be operating as normal.

Police said the deaths had been referred to the coroner.
