Emergency services were alerted to the fire in Rogers Street in the suburb of Sydenham just after 2am.

An elderly occupant escaped any serious injuries.

Not long afterwards a fire broke out at a factory on Blenheim Road in Christchurch.

Five fire engines were despatched however the building's sprinklers did their job.

Firefighters were also called to a house fire in fire in Miro Crescent on Stewart Island at 1.45 am.

Fire and Emergency Services shift manager Riwai Grace said they arrived to find the house well ablaze but crews stopped it from spreading to neighbouring properties and it has now been extinguished.
