The Families Commission says up to 20 private providers are expected to work through the new social services policy Whanau Ora.

Whanau Ora is being touted as a new way to deliver services through community based providers, rather than Government agencies.

It will receive $134 million over four years for administration, monitoring and research.

A welfare and social sector policy and reform conference is being held in Wellington and a Families Commissioner, Kim Workman, says the Whanau Ora plan is progressing well.

The Government says Whanau Ora is not just for Maori and is expected to be extended to Pacific Islands and Pakeha families.
