The redeveloped Hokitika waterfront area from Sunset Point to the north end of Beach Street will include new picnic tables, seating, landscaping and sculptures.

Westland District Council said the main part of the project was a carpark, which would be built above ground level at Sunset Point at the mouth of the Hokitika River to help protect the beach front from erosion.

"This was identified a number of years ago as a critical priority to protect the beach front from erosion by the sea, and is the impetus for the longer-term development project," the council said.

It said the project would be completed in several stages over a multi-year period.
