A pedestrian is dead after being hit by a car on State Highway 1, north of Wellington.
Police said the person was hit just before the turn off to Ngauranga Gorge about 6.30pm today.
They will investigate why the pedestrian was on the motorway.
Both northbound lanes on State Highway 1 are closed, and traffic is backed up to the Terrace Tunnel.
The road is expected to remain closed for some time.
