A missing fisherman who is presumed to have drowned in Lake Coleridge yesterday was trying to help another fisherman in trouble, police say.

Emergency services responded to reports a man had been swept under while fishing at the Mid-Canterbury lake yesterday evening.
Police said it was thought he had been trying to come to the aid of another fisherman.
Four members of the National Dive Squad were being called in to search the lake, which is very deep and cold.
