Call for action over air rifle licensing

9:59 am on 15 June 2010

The Police Association wants the Government to take immediate action over the licensing of high-powered air rifles.

An undercover police officer, Sergeant Don Wilkinson, was shot and killed with an air rifle after being discovered trying to install a tracking device on his car in Mangere, Auckland, in 2008.

At the High Court in Auckland on Friday, a jury found John Skinner guilty of Mr Wilkinson's murder.

The conviction is thought to be the first where an air rifle was a murder weapon.

At the moment, anyone over the age of 18 can buy an air rifle without any licensing or background checks.

Police Association president Greg O'Connor says an Arms Amendment Bill has been before Parliament's Law and Order Committee since 2005, having stalled for various reasons.

He says the issue of air rifles could be sorted out separately from the rewrite of the arms legislation.
