Police said 31-year-old Karl Roberts was driving his car along Uruti Road early yesterday afternoon, and apparently lost control and slid down a bank close to a stream.

His green Subaru Impreza was spotted by people a couple of hours later, but Mr Roberts was not with the car.

Heavy rain has swollen waterways in the area and the police said they are worried for his wellbeing.

Mr Roberts is a caucasian of thin build.

He was wearing a black beanie, a knee length dark green gautex top and running shoes.

Police are asking people to contact them if they have seen a man fitting his description.
