Trial of man accused of baby stepson's death starts

3:33 pm on 8 June 2010

The Crown and defence have outlined their cases in the trial in the High Court in Whangarei of a man accused of killing his baby stepson.

Kyle Robert Skerten is charged with the murder of Riley Osborne, who was 16-months-old when he died in Starship Hospital in December 2008.

Mr Skerten, 23, is also charged with multiple drug offences, including offering to supply methamphetamine.

The Crown says the baby suffered head injuries at his Kerikeri home which could not have been caused by a fall from his cot.

It says evidence will show the child also had bruises on his face and legs, and had earlier suffered a fractured thigh.

The defence has told the jury that the Crown cannot prove Mr Skerten caused the fatal injury, and the drug charges are irrelevant.
