MP seeks more action against tourist assaults

12:01 pm on 8 June 2010

A Labour MP says the Government should educate visitors and local communities to prevent more assaults on tourists.

Kelvin Davis says locals in one Far North community have been abused by tourists, and freedom campers have dumped rubbish and effluent on the roadside.

If the situation continues, he says, more tourist bashings are likely.

But Geoff Ensor from the Tourism Industry Association says the website camping.org.nz already directs tourists to camping grounds, public toilets and effluent stations as well as providing a range of safety information.

Mr Ensor says locals also need to be reminded of the importance of good hospitality as next year's Rugby World Cup approaches.
