Taranaki hospitals at capacity

The full house signs are being put up at Taranaki hospitals that are experiencing unprecedented patient demand.

Taranaki District Health Board chief executive Rosemary Clements said its 290 beds in New Plymouth and Hawera are full.

The biggest demand has been for medical patients who occupied 85 beds on Sunday, but the pediatric and intensive care wards are also full.

The DHB is reviewing its elective surgery lists and asking people with non-urgent conditions not to clog up the Emergency Department.

Mrs Clements said the DHB was not turning away urgent medical cases away but staffing and finding the resources to manage the level of demand was a challenge.
