A weak but shallow earthquake has shaken parts of the lower North Island awake this morning.
The 4.1-magnitude earthquake at 6.56am was centred 25km south of Paraparaumu, at a depth of 5km.
It was felt by hundreds of people in the Wellington region and as far north as Palmerston North.
Mother Nature provided a not so nice alarm for us this morning. https://t.co/JGahTlfNXj

Two shakes this morning! One sharp jolt, then the solid rattle just now. Rare for us to feel them up here on the Blue Mountains. #eqnz

For a 4.0 quake (aka, a tiddler), that sure gave the house a good rattle. Enough to dive for safety. Damn close epicentre. #eqnz
