Levin police say a man who was critically injured when he was hit by a train in Horowhenua last Friday may be from Christchurch.

Officers are still trying to identify the man, who has told them his first name is Alan.

He lost an arm and a leg in the accident, and police say he is still in a serious condition and highly medicated, with very limited speech, in Palmerston North Hospital.

A witness who gave the man a ride in Levin last Thursday told police he said he was from Christchurch.

Police want to hear from anyone else who may have seen the man before the accident, or who knows where his bags are.
