A 21-year-old cyclist has died after being hit by a truck on State Highway 1, north of Whangarei.

The cyclist was struck as the truck was travelling south about 7.30am.
Police said the driver believed he might have hit something and returned to the scene a while later.
He discovered the cyclist, who had died.
Police have notified the man's next of kin and a local kaumatua has arrived to bless the area.
