An elderly man is in a critical condition after being stabbed in the Southland town of Mataura.
Police said a man walked into his flat at about 10pm yesterday and demanded money.
When he was told there was none, he stabbed the elderly man in the chest, before running off.
Sergeant Scott MacKenzie said it was believed the assailant was wearing a grey hoodie and dark pants, and is thought to be of average height and build.
"When the offender fled the scene we believe he headed towards the railway station, and we ask that anyone who was in the area last night around the time of the stabbing please gets in touch," Mr MacKenzie said.
The victim was taken to Southland Hospital with serious injuries. He is currently in a critical but stable condition, police said.
