Police fear the road toll could reach 400 or more this year, because more people are dying on weekends.
Since the start of 2010, 180 people have died on the roads, four more than at the same time a year ago.
National Road Policing Manager Superintendent Paula Rose says the disturbing trend now is that an average of 3.6 people are dying during weekend incidents.
She says the figure last year was 2.9 per weekend, with alcohol, speed and failing to drive attentively all being factors.
Superintendent Rose says if parents know where their teenage children are, and what they're doing, that could help keep the number of road deaths down.
But she says if the road toll keeps tracking the way it is, it will exceed the 384 deaths recorded in 2009.
