Mr McGrath, who works as a builder, was last seen at his home in Halswell, where he lives alone.

Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney told media this afternoon they still hoped to find him alive.

"We can confirm we have been talking to a person of interest in the last two days who needs to be eliminated from the inquiry. No arrests have been made.

"Our focus is on finding Mr McGrath alive."

Officers raided two houses yesterday as part of the investigation, and forensically examined two vehicles. Mr Sweeney said three properties and three vehicles were now being examined.

He said anyone who might have seen Mr McGrath or his vehicle - a 1994 blue Subaru Legacy - needed to come forward.

"We've very grateful... to the people who have helped us so far in this investigation, particularly Mr McGrath's family."
