A man has been charged with dangerous driving over the deaths of two people, including his daughter, in a West Coast river last year.

Michael Saunders' four-wheel-drive got stuck while he was attempting to cross the Poerua River in June 2016.

His daughter, two-year-old Emily Saunders, and 66-year-old Barry Petrie drowned when they were swept away in the swollen river.

Mr Saunders appeared in the Greymouth Court on Friday 26 May charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death.

He was bailed to re-appear on 22 June.
