Almost 80% of Dunedin residents surveyed are against public funding for a proposed $188 million sports stadium.
A postal survey was conducted by Otago University Department of Marketing researchers over November and December.
More than 2000 residents responded to the survey, which asked respondents if they supported a proposal to fund the stadium with public money.
Researcher Dr John Williams says he adjusted the responses by age, sex and income, to more accurately represent Dunedin's population.
The survey found that 78% were opposed, with 22% in support.
Dunedin City Council meets early next month to decide whether to continue funding the project, as a replacement for Carisbrook stadium.
