Police said they were dealing with an "ongoing firearms incident" in the areas near Whakamaru, Mangakino and Kinleith.

They said they had followed a man driving a stolen car after he left a Tokoroa petrol station without paying about 9am.

The man drove onto nearby forest roads before abandoning the car and running into the bush, they said.

Armed police, dog units and a helicopter had been sent to find him.

They urged motorists in the area to avoid picking up hitchhikers, and warned State Highway 30 was closed between SH1 and Whakamaru, while travel was restricted in parts on SH1.
