A 69-year-old man was standing by his vehicle in Te Atatu Road about 2:15pm last Wednesday when he was hit by a silver station wagon.
The car likely drove off towards the Te Atatu shops, they said.
The man was still in a serious but stable condition with extensive injuries, they said.
Officers were currently searching the wider area for CCTV footage, and wanted to hear from any possible witnesses, they said.
