A former deputy principal who developed an inappropriate relationship with a student and had sex with her after she left school has lost his teacher registration.
The Education Council's disciplinary tribunal said Wayne Allen Frewen's actions amounted to serious misconduct.
It said Mr Frewen, then aged 39, met the Year 13 student regularly while she was at the college and he worked to develop an emotional bond with her.
The tribunal's decision said Mr Frewen, who was married at the time, frequently met the student after school and during the school holidays.
He took her on drives and to a cafe and after she left school he took her on a trip to Rotorua. He continued the relationship after the student left to study and their relationship became sexual.
The relationship ended after about a year when Mr Frewen began a relationship with someone else.
However, the student's mother discovered cards Mr Frewen had sent to her daughter and complained to the school, prompting his resignation and a mandatory report to the Education Council.
The student told the tribunal she always knew the relationship was inappropriate and now had problems trusting people and was taking antidepressants.
The tribunal said Mr Frewen accepted his misconduct was serious and that his teacher registration should be cancelled.
It refused an application to suppress Mr Frewen's name, but suppressed the name of the school, its location and the dates that the events took place.
