Police said the pair took cash from the van, which was outside a bank on Dominion Rd, then fled on foot about 4.45pm.

The road was closed between Mt Albert Rd and Jasper Rd for several hours afterwards, but cordons have now been lifted.

The police said they believed the offenders were carrying firearms during the robbery, but said no shots were fired and no-one was injured.

Bharit Bharava works at the Era Superette opposite the ASB and the ANZ on Dominion Rd.

He told RNZ he saw two men snatch cash bags off an ArmourGuard worker and run down a nearby alleyway into a carpark.

"The two guys came with the car, and they were just wearing black caps or masks, you know, and they snatched the bag [from] the ArmourGuard and they ran away up the carpark behind the ASB Bank," he said.

It happened very quickly, and the men were gone in one or two minutes, he said.

"The police came in five minutes but the two robbers were already gone."

There were still half a dozen police cars at the scene and more than a dozen officers, some of whom were carrying guns, he said.

Police said this evening they were talking to a large number of witnesses and checking CCTV footage to find out what happened.

They were still trying to find the two suspected offenders.

They did not believe the robbery was random, they said.
