South Taranaki is to install an artificial whalebone sculpture overlooking Opunake Beach.
The archway of life-sized whale bones made from steel, foam and fibreglass, with complementary rare Pacific plants, was created for the Rhododendron Festival in Taranaki two years ago. It has been in storage since then.
Another site overlooking Wainui Beach, Gisborne, was negotiated with the Gisborne District Council, but the South Taranaki District Council says it will now stay in Taranaki.
