Chemical storage building gutted by fire

8:40 am on 2 January 2009

A chemical storage building in the Christchurch suburb of Hornby has been gutted by fire.

It took up to 30 firefighters several hours to bring the blaze at the Chemical Freight Services building under control on Thursday, and involved the use of specialist teams.

Two firefighters were taken to Christchurch hospital suffering minor chemical burns to their hands.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at 5.40pm on Thursday. They were treating the fire as suspicious, though the cause has yet to be determined.

The fire service is unable to say what chemicals were in the building, but says there was no risk to local residents. The building is located in an industrial area.
