Power to more than 8,000 homes in Southland was cut for a time on Thursday following a transformer failure.
Townships including Riverton, Te Anau and Hiddon Bush lost their supply at 6.30am.
The lines company for the region, Power Net, said it was not clear what caused the Makarewa transformer to fail.
Power Net said a backup transformer was put in place and the supply was restored shortly before 7.30am.
