The Department of Conservation said the whale was old and in bad condition and looked like it came in-shore because it was ill.

Its staff, as well as police, were dealing with the matter.

The department said local iwi were also involved.

More than 300 whales died at Farewell Spit last month in one of the biggest whale strandings in New Zealand's history.
