Wednesday's papers are dominated by the Bay of Plenty rescue and the New Year Honours List.

New Zealand Herald

The front page is dominated by Tuesday's rescue of five people from the sea of the Bay of Plenty.

Under the headline 'The Longest Night', the paper has a big picture of skipper Te Rua Toetoe hugging his wife and details how he made sure everyone else was warm in the cabin before donning a wetsuit and heading outside to keep the boat afloat

Professor Ngatata Love was surprised to realise his award of Principal Companion of the Order of Merit was the highest to be given in the New Year Honours List.

Taranaki Daily News

Fonterra is reviewing its forecast payout: some predictions are that the weaker global economic climate could trim another 85 cents per kg from the current forecast of $6 per kg of milk solids.

The Dominon Post

The paper devotes most of its front page to the happy ending of the search off Tauranga.

It also features the recognition of Professor Ngatata Love in the Honours List who receives the highest honour given this time - a Principal Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit

A banner across the top says the road toll to date is the lowest toll for 52 years.

The Press

Paralympian Sophie Pascoe, 15, is named in the honours list. The paper quotes an historian who believes there's only been one younger person named in the New Year Honours

Otago Daily Times

The paper highlights its most prominent recipient of a New Year honour: University of Otago vice-chancellor and medical researcher Professor David Skegg who has been appointed a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit,

And the organisers of the New Year's Eve celebrations in the Octagon are promising a "surprise" for the expected crowd of 15,000.
