Trial of man accused of shooting police officers adjourned

4:43 pm on 6 March 2017

The trial of a man accused of shooting and wounding four police near Kawerau last year has been adjourned for the day before any evidence was heard.

Rhys Warren, 28, was at the High Court in Hamilton today facing charges of attempted murder, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and three charges of using a firearm against a law enforcement officer.

Four officers were wounded after a man held out in a house for nearly 24-hours.

The accused was representing himself and, apart from a brief moment, did not appear in court.

Justice Brewer told the jury Mr Warren had decisions to make about to what extent he would participate in the trial.

A lawyer appointed to assist the court, Ron Mansfield, told the judge Mr Warren had not had time to see new material the Crown intended to call in evidence and requested an adjournment until tomorrow morning.
