Witnesses in Queenstown helped police track down a man who ran from his car following a hit and run last night that has left a cyclist in a critical condition.

Police were called to the incident near the corner of Adelaide Street and Frankton Road area just after 10pm.

The victim, a woman in her 40s, was standing in the street with her bicycle when she was hit by the silver Subaru stationwagon.

Police say the driver, a 33-year-old man, left his car at the scene and ran away.

Police said eyewitnesses who believed they knew who the man was gave them enough details to track him down.

He will appear in the Queenstown District Court on Monday charged with driving dangerously causing injuring, and failing to stop and check if the pedestrian was injured.

The pedestrian was flown to Dunedin Hospital with critical injuries.
