Store owner says wrongly charged

In the wake of a report criticising the way police responded to the shooting of South Auckland liquor store owner Navtej Singh, another store owner says he was wrongly charged by police.

Virender Singh, who owns the Gilbert Road Discount Liquor outlet in Otara, faced two charges of injuring with intent following a confrontation with two youths who entered his shop in September 2008.

The charges were dismissed last year because of a lack of evidence.

Mr Singh says he was only trying to defend himself after seeing what happened to Navtej Singh, who was shot during an armed robbery on 7 June 2008, and died the next day.

Virender Singh says the police made a mistake in his case as well, and says police should not have charged him.

An Independent Police Conduct Authority report released on Friday condemns police for a string of failures, saying delays in getting help to Navtej Singh were unjustified and are arguably a breach of the police duty of care to preserve life.
