A painting by Charles Goldie is on sale for the first time since it was bought from the artist more than 100 years ago.

The portrait titled Rakapa; an Arawa Chieftainess has been on public display for the first time ever at Suite Fine Art Gallery in Wellington.

Gallery manager Nicky Calder says the gallery will sell the painting on behalf of the owners after the exhibition closes on Saturday.

She says the same family has owned the portrait for more than a century.

Ms Calder says another Goldie portrait of the same woman sold last year for more than $200,000.
