Overnight earthquake in Canterbury

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake was felt in North Canterbury overnight.

It struck just north of Culverden soon after midnight at a depth of 40 kilometres

About an hour and a half earlier a 5.1 quake was recorded off the coast of Fiordland at a depth of 5 kilometres.

Fiordland National Park lies between the earthquake's epicentre and populated areas. Few people reported feeling the tremor on the GeoNet website.
