Cash stolen from Canterbury ATM

12:56 pm on 27 January 2017

A burglar who managed to get into a Canterbury ATM over the weekend took a "substantial" sum of money, police say.

The theft occurred at the ASB bank ATM in Rolleston, south of Christchurch, about 2am on Saturday.

It was reported to police about 9am. An inquiry is under way.

Detective Matt Reynolds said in a statement a "substantial amount of money was stolen".

"We are working with both the security company and the bank involved and are following some positive lines of inquiry, including security footage," he said.

Armourguard has not returned RNZ's calls for comment.

An ASB spokesman said the incident was rare and the bank was assisting police with their investigation.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious that could be linked to the burglary was asked to contact police.
