Lifejacket hire costs just a gold coin

At more than 30 sites in Auckland, lifejackets are able to be borrowed for up to a week this summer for as little as a gold coin.

WaterSafe Auckland has been set up the hubs, which hire out lifejackets in all sizes, since 2012.

The aquatic educator for the council-funded organisation, Harry Aonga, said it started the first marae-based hub in April in Manurewa, which had 50 jackets on offer.

He said all the sites were listed on WaterSafe's website, and people could turn up, register their details and hire an appropriately-sized jacket.

Extra care needed over Christmas period

Meanwhile, Water Safe has said the drowning of a four-year-old boy in Auckland yesterday highlighted the extra danger to children over the Christmas period.

The boy died in a pool in Beachlands.

The chief executive of Water Safe, Jonty Mills, said extra vigilance is needed at this time.

He said any depth of water presented a risk, as it took less than a minute for a child to drown.
