Ady Gil crash report fails to determine fault

An Australian investigation has failed to determine who caused a collision between an anti-whaling speedboat and a Japanese whaling ship in the Southern Ocean earlier this year.

The New Zealand trimaran Ady Gil eventually sank after it collided with the Japanese whaling ship Shonan Maru 2. The Ady Gil was sliced in two.

Both the Japanese whalers and the Sea Shepherd's crew blamed each other for the incident, the ABC reports.

A report by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority says Japan refused to answer any questions and seized navigation information from the whaling ship as part of its own inquiry.

Ady Gil skipper, New Zealander Pete Bethune, is in a Japanese jail on five charges, including trespass, over the boarding of a Japanese whaler.
