Two teenagers have appeared in the Hamilton District Court in relation to a crash that killed four people near Ohaupo, near Cambridge, in June.
Dylan Cossey, 19, faces four charges of operating a vehicle in a race on Ohaupo Road causing death, and one charge of causing injury.
He is also charged with failing to stop to ascertain if an injury had occurred.
Stephen Jones, who is also 19, faces four charges of inciting Mr Cossey to operate the vehicle in an unnecessary exhibition of speed or acceleration causing death, and one charge of causing injury.
Hannah Lies Strickett-Craze, 24, Lance Tyrone Robinson, 28, Paul de Silva, 20, and Jason McCormick Ross, 19, were killed in the crash on State Highway 3 on 24 June this year.
At the time, police said it appeared a car came around a slight left-hand bend on the wrong side of the road and in correcting lost control and collided with a van.
They said speed and alcohol were likely contributing factors in the crash.
The four young people who died were in the car.
If found guilty, the two labourers could both face maximum penalties of 10 years imprisonment or $20,000 fines.
They were remanded on bail without plea to reappear in January.
