Police investigate kidnapping attempt in Hamilton

5:55 pm on 10 December 2016

A man tried to snatch a two-year-old girl from outside her Hamilton preschool in front of her father, police say.

Police said the girl was being dropped off at her Peachgrove Road preschool at 5.50pm when the incident happened.

As her father was getting his other child out of the car, another man called the girl over, grabbed her by the arm, and attempted to walk off with her.

The father yelled out to the man, who then walked off towards Te Aroha Street.

Police said the man was Caucasian, aged around 50, of medium build and around 177cm tall.

He was wearing a blue suit jacket, and possibly beige-coloured pants, and said while he was tidily dressed he may have been sleeping rough.

Detective sergeant Andrew Saunders said police were taking the incident very seriously.

"We need to try and identify that person to see what exactly their intention was."

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Hamilton police.
